Balance Training - the Science of Proprioception
In order to maintain balance and orientation your body employs a sense known as 'proprioception' - a sense of the relative position and motion of parts of the body. To keep the body upright your limbs are equipped with fast reacting muscle fibres which rapidly respond to nerve signals and ensure your weight is kept properly balanced.
For a healthy person normal movements are well within the body's proprioceptive capabilities but for snowboarders, skateboarders and surfers who push their bodies to the limit - grinding a rail, popping up on a wave or spinning out of a halfpipe, propriocetion can be mislead if it is not carefully trained. If your body has not been preconditioned for the new experience your limbs and muscles cannot react fast enough to the demands of the brain and as a result you lose your balance, strain critical muscles or suffer serious injury.
Balance training involves the use of balance boards to improve proprioception in a safe environment. Traditional balance boards have a loose roller underneath a flat board and have evolved little since the 1960s. Spindeck is different, it has no loose parts, is closer to the ground and meets the requirements of athletes in progressive sports who are continually learning new tricks and new ways to ride.
